Hey everyone welcome Dagny Dash to the world! DD was born on Friday May 23, 2008 at 9:32 pm. Weight: 6 pounds 5 ounces, Length: 20". She's perty cute now, but was mad as hell when she came out... she's definitely got her mom's temper.

Erica labored for about 15 hours and did awesome! I (Denver) cut the cord. The birth was stressful and hard, but the most amazing experience of my life.

we went to boston in late july for D to attend some conferences at M.I.T. and in the city.

Here is the best (and probably the smallest) RESTAURANT in all of boston. just ask a local. it is called oishi, which means tasty, or so i've heard. it was absolutely amazing and worth an hour's wait at lunch time.

PITTSBURGH. N@. if you don't know what that means, you will have to visit. sorry to have left you lonely so long, blog. i hope you are not expecting any pictures to be loaded onto you today. i cannot find clean socks, let alone the cord that connects the camera to the computer. so i will just write. to argue with ira glass, READING is the most visual medium.

denver and i bought a house in highland park, city of pittsburgh. we really did not know too much about highland park before delving into the real estate market here, but we have been pleasantly surprised and continue to be amazed at this lovely and vibrant community. years ago i would have never ventured through sketchy east liberty to get here, but now that the section connecting shadyside to highland park has been renovated with shops including yuppies' favorite wholes foods (insert choir of angels' voices here), walgreens, fancy restaurants like red room and abay ethiopian, home depot and others (soon to come is trader joes!), it is a treat to come over here. there are even plans for a pedestrian bridge to connect center ave to ellsworth's shopping district.

as for the house....as for the house....our kitchen is a cement slab, we have been sleeping next to suitcases in the basement and there is wall to wall painting supplies upstairs. hopefully this situation will improve in the next few weeks, as scheduled. i am maintaining a positive attitude. indeed. the place will be lovely! parquay as far as the eye can see! infloor radiant heat! air conditioning! a brand-spanking new state of the art kitchen! fun colors. what am i complaining about?

BLACK-EYED PEA SPRING ROLLS

here's a recipe that others seemed to love, although one i didn't care for until i tried it with a more traditional chinese filling; however, i promised to post both, so:

stuff you need for the indian-ish way:
a carrot, peeled and diced
a semi-truck full of canola oil
1/2 C minced onion
2 T fresh minced ginger (uh, YUM!)
chile peppers - your call how many...
3 C cooked black-eyed peas, drained and mashed
1 C frozen green peas
a lil salt
1 T (or more) curry powder
3 T lemon juice
1/2 t cayenne pepper
16 egg roll wrappers - look in the chilled "health food" section - sometimes they are near the vegetables...get the big square ones if you can
1 T cornstarch mixed with 2 T water

what you do:
boil the carrots for 15 min and set aside
saute onion, ginger, chiles for 2 min
add the B.E.P. (mashed) and cook for 10 min or so - should be pretty dry
add the green peas, curry, lemon juice, cayenne and then set aside
position an egg roll wrapper with the corner toward you
put some stuff in there and wrap it up!
put some of the cornstarch/water on the edges and then seal - it should be pretty secure
heat 2 inches oil in skillet - on medium
fry a bunch up at one time - takes 4-5 min
keep warm in 250 deg. oven

NOW - instead of that inside mixture, i tried:
cabbage, carrots, celery - some chinesey things. you can experiment.
tofu
even those see-throughy noodles would be good!

IT"S YOUR LUCKY DAY!

i have decided to post the famous chick pea chili recipe. and if you don't have much experience with with pots and pans, don't worry. it's super-easy. try it!!!

you need:

garlic (some)
onions (1)
veg stock (optional)
spices: cumin, hot peppers (any kind you feel comfortable with), cilantro
chick peas (2 small cans for each big can of tomatillos)
tomatillos - these are the tart, green tomatoes - get them canned.
sour cream (opt)
shredded cheese (opt)
a big pot

procedure:

sautee the garlic, onions, hot peps, cumin and some cilantro (save some of that for later)
add chick peas
add veg stock (or not)
put tomatillos in food processor and puree, OR chop them up IN A BOWL - they will explode with juice, so watch out.
put those in there.
cook it for a while - i usually let it get pretty hot, then turn it down indefinitely.
add cilantro right before serving. also, add sour cream, cheese.

one recipe that doesn't need salt! it's tasty as is!

I have not posted in a while. No excuse - other than being a little busy! Anyway, we went to the fabulous wedding of M and D - near Philadelphia - unbelievably my first jewish wedding. It was just lovely. And fun! I have bruises from the Hora! (?) Michele arrived with her parents in a carriage pulled by a horse and the adventure started there. Friends,We're back in the New Orleans area. We woke up early Wednesday morning and drove back to Metairie so my wife can go back to work. I'm living here at her work with her (in an office and sleeping on an inflatable mattress) until electricity is restored at my house. I'm cautiously optimistic that electricity will be restored soon--maybe this week.My house in Algiers did really well--we have one tree that is down in the back yard and a few shingles blown off of the roof. In fact, my house is messier on the inside than on the outside right now because of our hasty evacuation and cleaning out yucky refrigerators once we got back. However, I know of lots of people that have lost everything to flooding--for instance, I'm told that some houses here in Metairie have flooding up to their gutters.The damage is incredible to behold. Driving back through Mississippi revealed the real destructive power of the storm as there were more trees down than were standing. My church in Algiers (just a couple of miles away from my house) had the roof blown off of the two-story education building and it is a complete loss on the inside. I'm still getting paid for now, so I've been volunteering at a hospital here in Metairie to pass the time.

I got to talking to some of the DMAT folks here from Rhode Island and one lady said they received no direction from FEMA at all. The Rhode Island DMAT folks came down on their own and arrived in the area the night before the storm hit and rode out the storm in Baton Rouge. I heard the president of St. Bernard parish say on WWL radio that the Canadian Mounted Royal police showed up before FEMA. The storm was disaster enough, but FEMA's lack of response was a disaster as well. Don't blame New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin or Governor Blanco for the mess here--they were telling people to get out and they didn't listen. I talked to one lady that lived on an overpass for 5 days waiting to be rescued. Her story was incredible. Anyway, I asked her that if she had it to do over again, would she leave, and her response was an emphatic, "No."John SitaNew Orleans

Our brand new friends (Denver and I were Jim's guest) had a lovely wedding in a park in Berekely. Some Indian traditions were incorporated, making for a very memorable and beautiful afternoon. J and S exchanged strands of Jasmine and there was a dance performance by the remarkable (and soon to be world famous) Maya. I can't remember the last time I met so many friendly people! I hope to stay in touch with them and get to know them better, even if it is by way of cyberspace....

That would be baltimore, MD, of course! Jim came out our way and spent 3 fun filled, sunny days with us. Highlights included wineries of the Santa Cruz Mountains; a small trek up the coastline, where we found kite surfers hanging loose; dinner with an old friend, Valan and his wife, Susan; and the wedding of Jayadev and Susan in the hills of Berekely (which you can read about on it's very own post)! Gary and Elaine winged it over to san josie for a little over a week, which was WAY fun. The highlight of the trip was spending time in Yosemite Nat. Park, where we were greated by coyotes, shaded by spectacular sequoias, swept down stream through the valley on a raft and made to feel very tiny by gigantic cliffs and waterfalls.

We also made it into SF a few times for oysters, streetcars, irish coffees at the Buena Vista, the giants-vs-rockies and a GREAT cajun restaurant.

The next amazing thing to happen this summer was the arrival of Marta to our good friends, Radek and Kasia of Menlo Park! Well, I have decided to take a stab at THE BLOG! So here goes:

The wedding was fabulous - hot and humid pittsburgh weather, but we were "cooled" by the coolness exuding from all of our wonderful guests - family and friends, many of whom we had not seen for ages, and several of which I had yet met. The ceremony and reception music was exquisite - Michele, Steph, Andres, Doug, Mike and Preston played and sang amazingly and Azucar delighted us with their vibrant latin songs during the reception. The food was lovely and the cake was GONE. For me, though, the true highlight was seeing so many of my favorite people having such a great time. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience, and one I will cherish always. Thank you so much for coming and if you were not able, thanks for your thoughts and support. We will post a link to photos soon!!

sunday event

I realize that some people are leaving on sunday, but for those of you
who will still be around, we are planning on having a fun day in the
park - frisbee, etc. Again, we will keep you posted on the details.

Friday Evening Party

We are going to get together at a place downtown called Dowe's on 9th.
It is a nice and fun place and people can mill about without being
plastered to the dining table. We will send everyone directions
later, but I thought you might like to know that we have a place for
everyone from out of town to go and meet and eat, drink and be merry
on friday. We are planning on being there around 8pm and there will
be live music. More info to come! -Erica

Activities Before and After the Wedding

Given that it very rarely happens that all of the Dash/Hawk kids get together, we should think about what else we can do with the occasion. For sure on the Friday before the wedding, we (all the wedding guests who have to travel to get to the event, which is a lot of them) will go out to eat somewhere that can accomodate all of us. What about after the wedding, are people planning on staying around for a few days? We might postpone our honeymoon a bit if so. Any ideas for what we can all do? Vanessa recommended white water rafting down the Ohio Pyle or something like that. Or is that too much for you old-timers?
